IIM Bangalore’s International business summit Vista 2019 presents MacroScan in association with IIMB’s Economics Interest Group.

“It is better to be roughly right than to be precisely wrong” – John Maynard Keynes

This is an online-only event consisting of two rounds in which students are expected to don the hat of an economist and critically analyze a topic using economic models, data and daily news. A broad theme shall be given and students are free to pick any sub-theme in it to elaborate. The writeups shall be judged based on the originality and clarity of the problem highlighted along with data-driven research and correlation of the topic with mainstream economics.

Round 1 (Pre-Vista Prelims): Online
• The essay must be written in English.
• The competition is for individuals only.
• The Article should be of minimum 500 words and not exceed more than 750 words (excluding footnotes & introduction).
• Topic: Growth vs Development: A Policy Dilemma
– Put yourself in the shoes of central government policy maker and choose a model which is more effective and provide reasoning behind the same.
– Write a cohesive article in a newspaper op-ed format outlining any one or multiple dimensions of the topic.
– You can use examples such as Gujrat vs Kerala or USA vs Singapore and substantiate your viewpoint using key economic or other indicators.
– But don’t restrict yourself to the given examples, you can use other countries or their states.


Round 2 (Finals): Online
• The essay must be written in English.
• In the second round, candidates are expected to do a more in-depth analysis of the topic chosen with data driven insights, economic frameworks, and a fair bit of literature review
• The article should of minimum 1500 words and not exceed more than 2000 words (excluding footnotes & introduction).

Total prizes worth Rs. 5K

It is an online only event.

1. While assessing the essay, the weightage would be given as below:
o Originality, Uniqueness and clarity of the content
o Quality of the analysis and research
o Language and Structure of the essay
o Creative & appropriate use of graphics/ infographics
o Grammar, syntax and form

2. Any fact needs to be appropriately referenced. Any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification of essay.

3. The participants must carefully read through and agree to the following Terms & Conditions: All decisions in matters of eligibility, authenticity and final judgments will be with the organizing committee of Vista, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The format and structure of events on campus could be subject to change before the actual beginning of the event.

4. The decisions of the organizers will be final and binding on all participants.
